Shiga Prefecture, Japan
Late Edo to Meiji Period
Textiles dating from c. 1855–1905
Found in Shiga Prefecture, this unusually thick Boro textile is a rare example from Japan's Kansai region, where textiles of this weight are uncommon. Its many carefully layered and repaired fabrics suggest it remained in the same farming household for generations, where it was repeatedly mended rather than replaced.
Composed of cotton textiles dating from the late Edo through the Meiji period, each visible patch records decades of use and repair, preserving approximately 120–170 years of history within a single textile.
